Legal Clerk / Civil Rights Intern
Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR)

Description:        Responsibilities: Legal interns at the Council on American-Islamic Relations handle a wide variety of work. Most of this work falls under two categories: (1) intake and case management of individual clients who have been the victims of religious discrimination and (2) research assistance on pending litigation.

(1) Case management: Interns take shifts handling the intake line for civil rights complaints. Interns are responsible for handling individual cases and performing advocacy short of litigation. For example, interns will work with victims of discrimination to draft letters and EEOC complaints.
(2) Research assistance: Interns write legal memos on topics connected to CAIR's pending civil rights litigation. For example, topics may include religious discrimination by law enforcement and the terror watchlist statutory regime. Interns will discuss their research with staff attorneys to help develop creative approaches to litigation.

About CAIR:
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is a grassroots civil rights and advocacy group. CAIR is America's largest Islamic civil liberties group, with regional offices nationwide and in Canada. The national headquarters is located on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C.
Since its establishment in 1994, CAIR has worked to promote a positive image of Islam and Muslims in America. Through media relations, government relations, education and advocacy, CAIR puts forth an Islamic perspective to ensure the Muslim voice is represented. In offering this perspective, CAIR seeks to empower the American Muslim community and encourage their participation in political and social activism.

Fall 2014 Internship: Membership and Standards

Description:        InterAction’s Membership & Standards team is seeking current undergraduates, graduates, or recent graduate students for two unpaid fall 2014 internship positions in Washington, DC. InterAction is the largest alliance of U.S.-based international nongovernmental organizations (INGOs) working in every developing country. These internship positions offer the opportunity to be a part of a membership team within a dynamic organization that plays a key role in the international humanitarian and development community. Within this role, interns will learn about the management of a member-based nonprofit organization, the international NGO sector, and key issues facing the international relief and development community.

As part of the Membership & Standards team, interns will support the team’s major initiatives and activities, which include:
•             Gathering and analyzing data about members and their international work
•             Private Voluntary Organization (PVO) Standards
•             Membership services including recruitment and retention
•             Planning and managing a major event for member CEOs
•             Planning Forum 2015, InterAction’s signature annual event
•             Routine and important administrative and logistical tasks

Ideal candidates will have strong organizational and communication skills, excellent attention to detail, the ability to manage multiple tasks, the flexibility to meet changing deadlines and priorities, and positive attitudes. An interest in international development and humanitarian assistance is strongly preferred, along with past experience in the aforementioned areas related to the team’s major initiatives and activities. The specific work of an internship will be based upon an individual’s learning and professional goals, as well as the initiatives of InterAction’s Membership and Standards team.

As an intern, one can expect to gain the following experiences which extend beyond daily work duties:
•             Working group meetings: Access to meetings of members and InterAction staff that focus on a variety of current issues within the international development and humanitarian assistance fields
•             Potential interviews with senior-level staff members at InterAction
•             Opportunities to informally network with over 60 staff members and interns

Internships will range between 30 to 40 hours per week. Most work will occur at InterAction’s office, located in northwest Washington, DC. A small monthly travel stipend of $50 is available upon request.

Program Intern, African Apes Initiative
African Wildlife Foundation

Description:        The African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) is seeking a highly motivated individual to support the growth and development of the AWF African Apes Initiative (AAI). The Program Intern, AAI will compile literature, develop and update profiles of the actual and potential AAI-priority sites, provide remote assistance to the ongoing and future work at the AAI-priority sites focused on Cybertracker/SMART/ArcGIS data analysis and management, and support evaluation of the ongoing programs. This internship will report to the Director, AAI with matrix reporting to the Director, Conservation Geography. This Internship is for five (5) months and will be based in Washington DC, USA.

Responsibilities
- Research and maintain updated landscape profiles featuring conservation threats, targets, and socio-economic context for current and prospective AAI sites
- Support the on-site ecologists/Park managers to generate reports on law enforcement monitoring performance, species distributions, and threat patterns (human-wildlife conflict, poaching, traps, etc.) using SMART and ArcGIS. Disseminate reports and analysis to site managers and AAI team
- Review and manage data collected by AAI field programs using SMART/Cybertracker and ArcGIS. Archive clean data in online AAI data library with appropriate metadata. Contribute to evolution of AAI data collection protocol
- Use GIS/remote sensing techniques to map land use and socio-economic infrastructure that help define ape domain
