Conservation Beyond Protected Areas Internship

A diverse array of strategies is employed globally to conserve biodiversity, but assessments of conservation progress and performance almost universally focus upon national parks and other protected areas. To advance scientific understanding and inform conservation decision-making, this project will document and describe the use of conservation strategies beyond protected areas. The project may include both terrestrial and marine systems; geographic focus will depend upon data availability and organizational priorities. As the foundation for scientific publication, project outputs will include maps, graphs, statistical analyses, and an annotated bibliography.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

Graduate training in the social sciences, natural resource management/conservation, or related field. Preference will be given to candidates who will use the research as part of a graduate thesis
Experience with GIS
Experience with statistical packages (e.g. R, Stata)
Strong qualitative and quantitative research skills
Excellent organizational skills
Excellent communication skills
Familiarity with biodiversity conservation in developing countries.
Preferred:

Foreign language skills
Experience with EndNote or other reference management software
Experience with database management
Stipend: no

Working Conditions:

The internship is based at Conservation International headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, USA.
Time frame:

12 weeks, summer 2016.
