The Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Program Director for folk and traditional arts within its Division of Tourism, Film and the Arts’ Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC). As Program Director, incumbent will co-direct the Maryland Traditions program and administer grants for folk and traditional arts organizations. Maryland Traditions is a signature program of the Maryland State Arts Council, identifying, supporting, and showcasing the traditional arts and culture of the state. Duties related to this program include: co-directing statewide partnerships and initiatives with UMBC Co-Director; cultivating new partnerships and stakeholders; co-directing the annual Maryland Traditions Folklife Festival and Maryland heritage awards (ALTA – Achievement in Living Traditions and Arts), including recruitment of nominations, panel adjudication, and production of annual Awards Ceremony and Concert; co-directing Maryland Folklife Archives; participating in the Maryland Folklife Center feasibility study; and co-directing the Maryland Traditions Apprenticeship Awards and Project Grant programs. The incumbent will advise at high levels on issues of cultural policy in Maryland as well as with national and federal agencies pertaining to intangible cultural heritage and policies governing its protection; gather and disseminate information on Maryland's traditional arts; conduct field research to identify, document, and present Maryland tradition bearers; provide leadership and coordinate folk arts information gathering and program development with agencies and organizations in region; identify and secure external sources of grant funding for the Maryland Traditions program. Additional duties include the administration of the Folk and Traditional Arts discipline category in the MSAC Grants for Organizations Program and contribution to its overall management and direction.

Candidate must have experience carrying out ethnographic fieldwork; possess excellent written and oral communications skills and interpersonal skills needed to work with high level public and private sector officials. The ability to handle multiple, concurrent and high priority tasks is essential. Candidates should also have experience in managing digital assets and use of interactive media applications. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and Access and/or other relevant software. Experience in administration of grants, contracts, and/or public programs is required.

Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree in the folk arts, ethnomusicology, or related field from an accredited college or university and six years of experience in administrative staff or professional work, three of which must have been in the administration of a folklife organization or related area. Equivalent education and experience will be accepted.
