Job Opening at Montpelier

The Archaeology Department at James Madison’s Montpelier is looking to hire two fulltime laboratory technicians to work through April 2017. We are currently excavating an area of Montpelier known as the South Yard that contained three slave quarters, two smoke houses, and an outdoor kitchen. During the tenure of this position, laboratory technicians will be responsible for processing, analyzing, and cataloging artifacts from the South Yard. In addition, Montpelier’s Archaeology Lab is open to the public and laboratory technicians must be able to engage with visitors and lead mini-lab tours. Experience working in archaeological laboratories and knowledge of historic artifacts, particularly ones dating to the 18th and 19th centuries, is essential to this job. Experience in plantation archaeology, African American archaeology, and/or public archaeology is preferred. Housing is available on the Montpelier property.
